How Classmate Stab 5 School Children, A Teacher In Portugal

Authority in Azambuja in Northern Lisbon of Portugal has said the 12-year-old boy that attacked his classmates and a Teacher on Tuesday morning went home to eat and returned with a knife and a bulletproof vest on his backpack.

The 12-year-old boy who is currently with the police stabbed six fellow students at Elementary school in Azambuja, located 50 kilometers (31 miles) north of Lisbon, Portugal.

Valor Local, a local media reported that the stabbing case of five children and a teacher at Azambuja primary school have resulted to having the five children undergo surgery at the hospital of Vila Franca de Xira, but one of them was transported to the hospital of Santa Maria for being in serious condition, but there is no risk of life

The attacker has been taken into custody, though authorities have not yet identified a motive for the attack.

The victims who are school children are all aged between 12 and 14 – and one of them is in a serious condition after the terrifying attack, according to a source for Portuguese Civil Protection.

It was gathered that over five ambulances raced to the scene at around 2:30pm when the incident occurred, and a bullet-proof vest and a knife was discovered inside the alleged attacker’s schoolbag.

The colonel of the National Republican Guard (GNR) of Azambuja, Fernando Lisboa, told journalists at the door of the school that the victims are children between 11 and 14 years old and that there are five minor injuries and one serious injury.

The mayor of Azambuja, Silvino Lúcio, said the student went home to eat and returned to school with a knife and a bulletproof vest in his backpack and began attacking some of his classmates.

The motives for the attack are currently unknown, the GNR said, adding that the perpetrator was “calm” and waiting to speak with the Judicial Police, which will be in charge of the investigation. The rest of the students left the school and were handed over to their parents.

Azambuja Mayor Silvino Lúcio confirmed that one boy was seriously injured with a chest wound, but his life is not in danger. 

He was transferred to a hospital in Lisbon.

Portuguese Prime Minister, Luís Montenegro condemned the incident and extended wishes for a speedy recovery for the injured children. 

He posted on social media platform X, calling the incident an “isolated attack” and rare in the country.

“It was an isolated act and a strange occurrence in Portuguese society, but one that should make everyone who works in public space reflect with a sense of responsibility,” Montenegro wrote.
